Led by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, nine Howard University students came to together to form Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority for the purpose of encouraging high scholastic, moral and ethical standards, promoting unity and sisterhood, and improving the social stature of African-Americans.

On January 29, 1913, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was legally incorporated to perpetuate its existence internationally for years to come.

Today, the sorority serves all mankind through a nucleus of more than 170,000 women in the United States, the Caribbean, Europe, and Africa.
